Lotus 49: The Story of a Legend

Born of an agreement between Ford, Cosworth and Team Lotus, the Lotus 49 embodied Colin Chapman’s philosophies of simplicity and lightness in an elegant form. In a single leap the Lotus 49 – the first car to be powered by the brilliant new Ford Cosworth DFV engine – moved Formula One technology several notches up the evolutionary scale, and can now be seen as a pivot about which F1 technology turned and refocussed.

Not only was the 49 a state of the art design, but it would be driven through several tumultuous seasons by some of the world’s greatest drivers including Jim Clark, Graham Hill, Jochen Rindt and Emerson Fittipaldi.

This book tells the definitive history of the Lotus 49, from inception to final development, and race-by-race, season-by-season motorsport action from all around the world. It provides candid behind the scenes stories related by the characters who witnessed the 49’s triumphs and tragedies first hand.

Rounding off the book is an appendix detailing the individual chassis history of each of the nine Lotus 49s built by Team Lotus.
